Dog Banned in India

23 dangerous dog breeds banned by the Indian government

Addressing the increasing number of dog attack cases lately, the Central government wrote to the state governments asking them to ban the import, sale and breeding of certain dog breeds which are considered dangerous in India. These banned dog breeds include Pitbull, Rottweiler, Terrier, Mastiffs, among others and their cross-breeds as well. The idea being that these dog breeds are not only dangeorous, but their attacks could also be a reason for humans' deaths.

According to a report by ET, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying sent a letter to all states, wherein local bodies were urged to refrain from giving licenses or permits to people for the sale or breeding of these "banned" dogs. And for people who already own these banned dogs, they were urged to get their pets sterilised to prevent their breeding.

This decision was taken after a committee, which included experts and animal welfare groups, submitted their report as a response to Delhi High Court's order. For the unversed, the Delhi High Court had earlier banned some dog breeds to be kept as pets. And the Court had asked the Union of India to come up with a unanimous decision, after discussing it with other stakeholders, in three months' time.

The decision to ban these 23 "dangerous" dog breeds in India is a step towards responsible pet ownership in the country.
